It can be difficult buying mobility scooters for tall people if you are not knowledgable in what to look for. As the majority of mobility scooters aren’t designed for big and tall people, buying one simply based on price or features can bring about your downfall.
As beneficial as a mobility scooter can be for someone of any age, if you’re taller than 6 feet, the number of available options becomes very scarce. But this is not to say there are no options because there is.
Below you can find 4 suitable options for the people that are taller than 6 feet. There are a few basic requirements for a scooter to be suitable for a taller person and these are seat height, legroom, weight capacity, backrest, and overall stability. While other features of a scooter can improve the quality of life, if these basic principals aren’t met, the tall person will struggle to find comfort.

What To Look For If You’re Tall
As any tall person knows, sitting down can be quite uncomfortable if the seat on the chair is not tall enough. Take another mobility aid for example, the rollator. While you can have height adequate handles to hold onto, if the seat is not set tall enough, then you can’t fully relax and recover those muscles as a tall person.
When it comes to mobility scooters, the seat height is just about the most important factor to consider when you’re tall. As you will be sitting on this thing 100% of the time, you need a seat that suits your height.
Most seat heights are suitable for people shorter than 6 feet as they can extend to about 18 inches in height. Us taller people ideally want seat heights greater than 20 inches.
Weight capacity and width of the seat are especially important if you’re big and tall. As most tall people are heavier due to longer torsos, ensuring the weight capacity of the scooter is higher than your body weight is critical.
Most scooters are rated to 250 pounds, which again suits the average person. But the big and tall people will need a higher rated option. Below you can find scooters from 250 lb capacity to over 400 lbs.
Tall people have long legs and as a result need more legroom, just like buying a car as a tall person. The overall length of the scooter will impact the amount of legroom it offers.
But this is not always the case as the seat can be positioned closer to the handlebars, even tho it’s a longer scooter. So ensure the seat is positioned far enough back to offer you enough space for your legs.
One aspect many people don’t consider when buying a mobility scooter is that taller people sit higher. Therefore needs to ensure they have a scooter with the best center of gravity to ensure better stability and balance.
4 wheel scooters do offer better center of gravity, but it’s not an absolute must for tall people. Provided you have the physical capabilities and balance, a 3 wheel scooter can still be possible for a tall person.
Best Mobility Scooter For Tall Person
Seat Height 20″-22″
Weight Capacity: 350 Lbs
Mobility scooters are a fact of life for some people and Drive Medical understands this which is why they have designed this excellent mobility scooter. Drive Medical has designed this scooter to make life easier by adding certain features and keeping the cost reasonable.
Sitting for long a long period of time is something that you’ll be doing with a mobility scooter so the seat needs to be high quality in my opinion. This is something that Drive Medical has knocked out of the park with the amount of comfort this seat has to offer.
Mobility Scooter For Big And Tall People
But more importantly, for the tall person, the seat can raise up to 22 inches tall. This extra height allows tall people with longer legs the freedom to sit comfortably without feeling cramped, a must when buying a mobility scooter as a tall person.
For the big and tall people, this mobility scooter is rated to hold up to 350 pounds, which is why its also a heavy duty model. While the capacity is great, the seat is only 17.5 inches wide so you have to ensure you can fit in between the arms while finding comfort in the seat.
The seat offers a lot of little features that when combined make it one of the best seats on the market. You’re able to swivel the seat so you can get in and out easier, it offers three different height adjustments, the armrests can be raised up to get out easier, and my personal favorite the ability to make the armrests wider!
Battery Quality & Range
One of the things that I really like about this mobility scooter is how it offers two different charge ports. They included a charge point on the front just underneath the handles and then a port on the back. This makes it a lot easier to put it into a position to charge it in my opinion.
The batteries of this mobility scooter are a pair of 12V x 20AH batteries that hold a good amount of charge. The specs of these batteries give it a 15-mile radius but that doesn’t take into account inclines and how hard they will have to work. I still find this to be a really good amount of distance you can get off one charge.
Quite The Portable Option
While there are a number of things that can be considered difficult when needing a mobility scooter, it’s often how difficult they can be to transport that is a critical buying factor. This scooter can be taken apart into 4 pieces making it much easier to store and transport. This means you don’t need a larger vehicle to transport it on the occasions you need to get out of the house.
Since you can break it down into multiple parts to put in your car this can save you money since you don’t need a joey lift. But mobility scooters are heavy even when you break them down into 4 smaller pieces so having someone to help you lift it is a good idea.
300 Lb Weight Capacity Mobility Scooter
Seat Adjustable Up To 20″
When it comes to everyday use mobility scooters they require certain features in order to make your life easier. I believe ComfyGo has managed to achieve this feat by making an extremely reliable and useful everyday mobility scooter that will help improve your everyday life.
Something that really impressed me is how quickly you can take apart this mobility scooter. Once you’ve gotten used to the set up it can take less than a minute which is really useful when going places.
Even tho this scooter weighs only 94 lbs I’d still recommend having a second person to help you lift it as it can get heavy for some people.
I quite like the large carry basket this mobility scooter comes with. This really makes carrying those extra things when operating this scooter that much easier which is what mobility scooters are meant to do. It’s pointless having an awesome scooter if the basket can’t carry your shopping.
Zero Turn Maneuverability!
One of the most difficult things when operating a mobility scooter is the turning radius and getting stuck in a smaller room. With this scooters incredible zero-turn maneuverability system, getting trapped in tight corridors can be a distant worry that you don’t need anymore.
What this system means is that you can turn a full 360 degrees without moving in a forward direction. So you can see how this helps with getting out of tight situations and help you feel that little bit safer when using this mobility scooter.
The battery of a mobility scooter is important as it will tell you a great number of useful things about the scooter itself. This model is powered by a 24V battery that holds a good amount of charge with it allowing this scooter to go up to a range of 13 miles.
The 24V battery has a fairly decent charge time with it taking between 6 and 8 hours to fully charge the scooter. Personally I don’t find this charge time too bad as you can charge it the day before you need it and you will get a good amount out of the battery. Just remember to put it back on charge overnight if you plan on using it every day.
When you combine the extra tall seat, range and how quick these battery charges you’ve got yourself a really decent base for a tall person’s mobility scooter. This works really well with the top speed of this scooter being a safe 5mph which is excellent for those built-up areas.
Best Mobility Scooter For Big & Tall People
Best For Heavy People – 22″ Seat Height
Drive Medical is back again with another incredible mobility scooter that is excellent for big and tall people. Even if you’re not either of those things this mobility scooter is still an amazing piece of machinery that is worthy of your consideration.
The battery and motor on this mobility scooter are impressive and offer a lot of range for a single charge. The batteries (pair) are 50AH that will give you up to an impressive 20 miles which is one of the best in my experience.
Designed For Heavy & Tall Persons
This mobility scooter has one of the highest weight capacity on the market making it useful for the large people out there. Having a 425 lbs capacity like this mobility scooter is extremely useful as it gives the heavier people out there peace of mind when they sit on this chair.
Just having a large weight capacity doesn’t instantly make it great for heavy people in my opinion. Thankfully Drive Medical included anti-tip wheels to add that extra bit of safety for when you use this scooter which just adds even more value to this impressive bit of machinery.
The seat can be height adjusted to 22-inches tall as you can see in the specs pdf. Again, this extra height is critical for the tall user to feel comfortable and safe while on the scooter.
Extra Wide Seat For Bigger People
While there a lot of things that make a mobility scooter great or not, I find the seat is one of the more important ones. If the seat of your scooter isn’t comfortable than how are you supposed to sit in it for hours? Which is one of the reasons I like this scooter since the seat is not only comfortable but offers some nice features as well.
The width of the seat is one of the reasons this chair is so comfortable since you don’t feel like you have half your body handing off. The seat is 22 inches wide and has a lot of adjustable features that make this an easy chair to recommend.
Having the larger backrest with the added headrest makes this an even more comfortable seat in my opinion. But why stop there since you’re able to recline the backrest and adjust the headrest to your height to make it even better suited to tall people.
The Only Con
While this isn’t a dealbreaker it’s something to note. This scooter is heavy coming in at 264 lbs in total which means you will require a vehicle with a lift to move the chair around if you plan on moving this scooter by van. But if you weight 400 lb or thereabouts and are quite tall, then there’s not a better option in my opinion.
3 Wheel Mobility Scooter With Tall Seat 20″
Weight Limit 250 Lb
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, transporting a mobility scooter is an important task that is often made difficult because they can require an expensive lift. Thankfully there are companies like EV Rider who have thought about the people who can’t afford to have such expensive things just so they can increase their quality of life.
The reason the EZ Rider is so portable is that it can be folded down to a compact unit that can fit in the majority of car trunks. Making it a great option for the everyday ordinary person. When folded down, the scooter measures 17.3 inches x 16.5 inches x 28.7 inches.
One thing I really like about this mobility scooter is that it has flat-proof tires which is great for giving you peace of mind when operating. Unlike other companies, EV Rider made sure to make all of the tires flat-proof instead of just the front tire. As a result, you feel safer to drive around without thinking you’re going to get stuck because of a flat.
Small Battery Big Range
EV Rider went with the smaller 11.5Ah lithium-ion battery instead of something much larger which is how they managed to keep the weight down. This does mean it has a lower top speed compared to other models with it only being 3.8mph which does actually make it safer as a result.
You’d think with such a small battery you wouldn’t get a lot of charge out this scooter, fortunately, this isn’t the case. You’re able to get up to 10 miles with this scooter which is really impressive for such a small battery. However, the trade-off for this is that it doesn’t hold its charge as well when you make it work harder compared to other scooters.
Compact Is The Name Of The Game
This mobility scooter was designed with keeping the weight down and making it easier to transport for the average person while maintaining high quality. This scooter is an impressive 42 lbs which is one of the lightest scooters on the market. Being such a lightweight makes this scooter a practical choice for most tall people.
When you have this scooter fully compact you’re able to fit it into most trunks of most vehicles. This is because it folds down to an impressively small size of 17.3″ x 16.5″ x 28.7″ inches as mentioned earlier. This makes it an excellent scooter to store away when not needed as well.
A Small Complaint
If there is one issue with this mobility scooter it would be the backrest and just how low it is. This can make it uncomfortable for very tall people and people that want to use it for long periods of time. However, this chair wasn’t really designed for long periods of use and more for short bursts between places. Which is why I don’t think it should be a dealbreaker for some.
Mobility Scooters Buyers Guide
3 Wheel VS 4 Wheel Mobility Scooters
The difference between 3 and 4 wheel scooters are small and large at the same time with them each offering their unique advantages. This doesn’t make either choice a bad one as they both improve your quality of life. But choosing one over the other can make a difference as they can be better suited to different circumstances.
3 wheel mobility scooters offer a lot of positives for there typically lower cost compared to 4 wheels. They usually have a tighter turning radius which means it’s easier to turn and not get stuck. One of the best advantages to a 3 wheel scooter is that they’re usually lighter which makes them easier to transport.
Most people who go for a 4 wheel scooter are looking for the increased stability that comes from having 4 wheels which makes you feel safer when riding one. There is also the added bonus that they can handle the off road terrain better than a 3 wheeler. So depending on how you plan to use your scooter will determine whether you need a 3 wheel or a 4 wheel mobility scooter.
Basically, if you plan to take your scooter off road, go ahead with a 4 wheel option. It will provide greater stability and traction on the more difficult terrains. But that’s not to say you can’t use a 4 wheel scooter on hard flat surfaces either. If you feel you need a better balance in general, go for a 4 wheeler.
But if you think your balance is pretty good and don’t intend on using the gravel on grass, gravel, etc, then a 3 wheel is the more economical option.
Types Of Mobility Scooters
There are three types of mobility scooters with them being small, mid-sized, and heavy duty with them all offering their own advantages. Smaller mobility scooters are easy to fold down which makes them excellent for when you need to transport them. There smaller size makes them great in shopping centers where there is a lot of people.
Medium scooters are the more common models you will see out on the streets. This is because they offer some of the smaller scooter advantages while giving you that extra bit of power when you need it. This means they can handle slightly rougher terrain compared to smaller scooters.
The larger heavy-duty mobility scooters are the kings of the scooter world as they offer a lot of range and comfort. They usually have the most amount of comfort since they often have really supportive seats which is great for anyone who needs a mobility scooter.
Understanding The Battery Types
Most scooters have one of two types of batteries such as a GEL mobility scooter battery, or a Sealed Lead Acid mobility scooter battery. GEL batteries are more designed for your everyday scooter and Sealed Lead Acid batteries are better for those who only use their scooters on the occasion.
You should always remember to be careful with batteries as they are dangerous items. Batteries produce explosive gases so you need to keep sparks and flames away from them and make sure you don’t drop either the battery or something on them. You also need to keep your tools or something like a watch away from the terminal as this can result in an electrical shock.
How To Recharge The Batteries
Before using your scooter it’s highly advised that you read the instruction manual to learn how to charge your scooter. Since all scooters are different and what works for one may not work for yours tho there are a few tips that can be applied to all scooters.
The first thing you want to do is make sure your scooter is powered off since it can be dangerous if you don’t. You should also give your scooter enough time to fully charge the battery and avoid stopping it midway. Don’t forget to charge your batteries even when you won’t be using your scooter for a while as letting a battery drain like that can hurt its lifespan.
While most of the these features arent relevant to buying a mobility scooter for tall people, they are general knowledge any scooter owner or carer needs to become familiar with. For the safety of the person on the scooter as a well as maintaining a lnger lifespane from the scooter.
